She Builds: Wit & Wisdom from Three Port Townsend Woman Boatbuilders

Three Port Townsend woman boatbuilders discuss the big and small boat projects they've built, designed, or repaired, and challenges they've faced—from fears and doubt to defying gender stereotypes, juggling motherhood, and managing relationships as the only woman, too often, on the job.

Diana Talley, Julia Maynard, and Esther Whitmore range in age from late 30s to near 70. They were born from as far away as New York and Boston and close as Seattle, and all moved to Port Townsend to work on boats.

Their education ranges from apprenticeships with some of the region's most respected shipwrights to training in tall ships. Some have been independent contractors while others are employed by big shops like Haven Boatworks and/or founded their own boat shop in the Port.

The panel will be moderated by Kaci Cronkhite who has been a worldwide advocate for women and girls' competence at all levels of the maritime industry.
