LIGNIA Yacht sails away with prestigious DAME Design Award at METSTRADE 2019

by Rick Hollister 21 Nov 2019 20:42 PST

LIGNIA Wood Company®, the British manufacturer of LIGNIA Yacht, is celebrating after winning a coveted DAME Design Award at METSTRADE 2019.

LIGNIA Yacht, the real wood alternative to Burmese teak decking, sailed through to the finals in the 'Marina equipment, boatyard equipment and boat construction tools and materials' category, beating off strong competition to take the top prize.

The METSTRADE jury praised LIGNIA Yacht as a real wood yacht deck that responds to environmental concerns regarding Burmese teak, while still meeting the continued demand for a traditional-looking wooden deck. After scrutinising a sample of the sustainable product, the jury commended LIGNIA Yacht as a welcome addition to the market, and crowned it as the pinnacle of the decking industry.

LIGNIA Yacht has had a stellar 2019, as it won the highly prestigious Innovation Award at the IBEX yacht show in Florida in October, and it was announced as a finalist at the Maritime UK Awards for Innovation, in Southampton, in September.

LIGNIA Yacht is made from radiata pine that is grown on FSC®-certified plantations and is then modified in the company's 50,000 sq ft manufacturing plant in Wales, offering a responsible alternative to teak for yacht decking. The resulting LIGNIA Yacht wood has the performance and visual characteristics of popular hardwoods, and in some cases surpasses their performance.

The sustainable wood product is now specified on yachts worldwide, including Spirit Yachts 50CR, which was unveiled at Southampton Boat Show earlier this year.

Hans Ng, CEO of LIGNIA Wood Company, said: "We couldn't be happier with the success LIGNIA Yacht has enjoyed since we launched it 12 months ago. With two internationally acclaimed awards behind us and LIGNIA Yacht now being specified on boats worldwide, we can't wait to see what 2020 brings. Here's to a brighter, more sustainable future in the yacht world!"

The DAME Design Awards is considered to be the world's largest marine awards event. It celebrates marine businesses' attention on the art and science of design in all aspects, including styling, functionality, innovation, ease of implementation and practicality of use. It is held at the annual Amsterdam-based marine industry trade show, METSTRADE.
