New Sunsail Charter Base – in the Bahamas

by Sail-World Cruising on 7 Dec 2007
Bahamas beach idyllic for snorkelling and swimming SW
Looking for somewhere new to charter a bare boat? Sunsail has just announced that they are opening a new charter base in the Bahamas.

Tropical sun, white sands and and turquoise clear seas on the Islands of The Bahamas offers an alluring alternative for a sailing holiday.

The Islands of the Bahamas form a 100,00 sq mile archipelago that extends over 500 miles of the clearest water in the world. With the world’s third longest barrier reef and nearly a quarter of the worlds coral lying in their waters, these islands are simply not to be missed.

The new base in the Abacos will give an all-new meaning to sailing. Somewhere in this 120 mile necklace of islands with often uninhabited cays and beaches, any explorer is sure to find the ideal private spot for relaxing with a glass of chilled champagne and a good book.

If you fancy spending some time exploring these beautiful islands off the water then there is plenty to see here too. For example, The Abaco National Park is one of the few places in The Bahamas were you can find the distinctive Abaco or ‘Bahamian’ Parrot. There is also a ferry service available for a fun alternative way of island hopping.

Sunsail’s new base, open in February 2008, is located at Marsh Harbor, the center of the Abacos, and is perfectly placed to explore the surrounding hot spots.

There are lots of alternatives when you charter a boat here. You can head straight over to Hope Town, home to the famous striped lighthouse and enjoy a cocktail as you watch the sun set over Elbow Cay, also a great spot to snorkel. Great Guana Cay to the north is another stunning snorkeling spot not to be missed.

If your interested in history, New Plymouth on Green Turtle Cay is a New-England style village with pastel clad board homes, a museum and sculpture gardens. You can explore the islands to the north of the base and be sure to stop off at Treasure Cay – one of the National Geographic’s top 10 beaches.

Heading south from Marsh Harbor, Pelican Cays National Park is a spectacular stop off. Home to an underwater adventure, it’s one of the most popular snorkeling and dive spots in the area. Sandy Cay Island is featured as the backdrop to ‘Gilligan’s Island’ and is ideal for a peaceful picnic. Once you’ve sailed the Abacos you’ll understand why these islands just off the coast of Florida are loved by sailors the world over.

The appeal of offshore
