Over the recent Topper National Training, we trained at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA), Carsington Water, and Grafham Water, experiencing a full range of conditions that pushed both performance and consistency.

At WPNSA we focused on high-performance sailing in waves and stronger breeze. The emphasis was on maintaining speed through chop, aggressive hiking, and controlled, fast downwind sailing. This environment demanded precision and fitness, helping sharpen boat handling under pressure.

At Carsington and Grafham, the challenge shifted to inland conditions — shifty, gusty, and tactical. This required quick decision-making, strong awareness, and the ability to link shifts and pressure effectively to gain positions.

Across all venues, key performance areas included:

  • Maximising boat speed through refined sail settings and body positioning
  • Delivering consistent, front-line starts with strong acceleration
  • Executing clean, fast manoeuvres and mark roundings under pressure
  • Developing race-winning strategy through better reading of shifts and pressure

Daily debriefs allowed for detailed feedback and analysis, reinforcing learning and driving continuous improvement.

Overall, the programme was highly effective in building speed, consistency, and tactical awareness. The training has raised performance levels and provided a strong platform to compete at the front of the fleet at upcoming national events.
