Hungarian victory at the 29er European Cup and National Championship in Alsóörs

by International 29er Class 22 Sep 2025 11:06 PDT 18-21 September 2025

Alsóörs hosted the 29er European Cup and National Championship last weekend, an event marked by challenging wind conditions and thrilling finishes. Over the course of three days, 26 teams from five countries competed in nine races on Lake Balaton.

Saturday brought scorching heat and calm winds, forcing the race committee to cancel all races for the day. The sailors, however, enjoyed a lively hot dog party on shore. On Sunday, the well-known morning easterly wind offered better conditions: thanks to an advanced start announced earlier, the Alsóörs Marina Sailing Club successfully completed two races in the early hours.

The championship concluded with a dominant Hungarian performance. Csekovszky Mór and Zarándy Martin (SVE) demonstrated their skill in light wind conditions, clinching victory in the final race and securing both the Hungarian national title and the European Cup trophy. The Kis-Szölgyémi-Juhász team finished second, while the Fehér-Fehér duo took third place, also earning recognition as the best female crew of the regatta.

A special moment highlighted the closing day, as Boró and Szoni completed their final races in the 29er class. In keeping with sailing tradition, fellow competitors and club members celebrated their farewell by throwing them into the water alongside the newly crowned champions.

The event was deemed a success by both organizers and sailors, made possible through the support of the Hungarian Sailing Federation, the State Secretariat for Sport of the Ministry of Defence, the National Institute for Sports Development and Methodology, Sport Nation, Samsung, Rooster, Galco, Alsóörs Marina, and the Municipality of Alsóörs, as well as the invaluable contribution of volunteers, race officers, and judges.

Prizes were presented by András Holczhauser, Secretary General of the Hungarian Sailing Federation, and Gábor Ferenczy, Deputy Mayor of Alsóörs. At the award ceremony, several special prizes were also presented. The organizers paid special tribute to the newest members of the class, whose outstanding performance and enthusiasm earned them well-deserved recognition as well.

Alsóörs proved to be a worthy host - and as the organizers concluded: "Alsóörs welcomes, holds, and awaits your return..."
