Noble Marine & Sailingfast UKLA ILCA 4 Spring Qualifier 2 at the WPNSA

156 sailors competed in the 2nd UKLA Qualifier of 2023. The primary sponsors were Noble Marine and Sailingfast with Rooster and Ovington Boats sponsoring the qualifier series and hosted by WPNSA.

The racing was held in Portland Harbour in light winds on Saturday and not all races were completed. However a much better forecast for Sunday saw the fleets racing in the very popular Weymouth Bay, the same waters that hosted the 2012 Olympic Games.

The ILCA4 is a class where the RYA recognise the boat as a Junior Class for U16s. The UKLA keep the entry open to all ages and many sailors not so comfortable in the larger ILCA6 rig can still compete with the U16s. UKLA encourages sailor of all ages to compete with this rig - this includes Masters.

The U16 Boys were led by Leo Yates, who also won the event overall counting 3 bullets and a 2nd sailing in Weymouth Bay. Olly Mayo was 2nd U16 Boy, with Alvaro Alonso 3rd. The U16 girls were won by Ciara Murphy from Royal Hospital School, she was also 1st Girl Overall. 2nd U16 was Tenby's Nina Marsh, with Jessica Powell 3rd.

Ciara said "Conditions were light and challenging on Day 1 but I was happy with my results which were pretty consistent. The fleet was pretty even after the first day of racing.

The first race on day 2 brought a lot of surprises with a wind shift on the first upwind. I found myself sailing a reach on both upwind and downwind legs. This proved to be my discard as my last two races were better with a 7th and 6th.

Overall, I was pleased with the weekend's racing and am looking forward to the next qualifier this weekend.."
