Squib Scottish and Northern Championships at Royal Forth Yacht Club

by Will Davies 10 May 2019 10:12 UTC 4-5 May 2019

The Scottish and Northern area Squib Championships were held over the weekend of 4th/5th May at Royal Forth Yacht Club in Edinburgh. The club was delighted to welcome Squibs from Royal Yorkshire YC and Royal Tay YC, to compliment the ever growing fleet of Squibs in Edinburgh.

Five races were held over the two days, and despite a potentially disappointing weather forecast of four seasons in one day (wind, sun, cloud and even snow!), competitors were treated to some sunny conditions in light to moderate conditions. So much for the weather apps!

The sailing waters off Granton Harbour never fail to disappoint, and after launching, briefing and a warming soup and roll, racing began on the first day. It was a wonderful sight seeing the Squibs on the start line in force, on the Forth, with Edinburgh Castle providing a beautiful backdrop to proceedings. Starting throughout all the races was competitive and tight, yet not one recall was needed!

The event was dominated by the superb sailing of Gerard Dyson and Tony Saltonstall from Royal Yorkshire YC who were sailing Alchemy (800) as they achieved a clean sweep of results. Hot on their stern was Willpower (832), sailed by local Royal Forth YC team of Will Davies and Donald Mclean, who consistently just couldnt get their noses in front of Alchemy. A tight battle for third place was had, with Royal Forth YC Tom Thumb (639) George Brown just beating Royal Tay YC Zoom (750) David Levison on count back. All the boats competing throughout the fleet had their good moments and it was good to see so many smiles coming off the water. The racing throughout the event was superb, with lots of close racing and sparking sailing conditions.

Off the water, the competitors were treated to the usual high standard of Royal Forth YC hospitality and a fun evening out was had on the Saturday evening in the heart of Edinburgh for some food and some real ale tasting. The friendliness and willingness of competitors to help each other out off the water is a trademark of the Squib fleet and this event was no exception. Huge thanks go to Royal Forth Yacht Club, who laid on an excellent event both on and off the water, and have now laid down a clear marker for further open events at this superb venue.
