Burnham Week 2025 - Day 3

In what seems like a repeat of last year's Bank Holiday Monday, the third day of Burnham Week 2025 greeted competitors with champagne sailing conditions, while the town quay was buzzing with activity, with pirates of all ages prowling the streets.
On the Burnham Sailing Club start line, the dinghies were joined by the Phantoms for the last day of the Bank Holiday Weekend.
After a fierce battle, the ILCA/Laser fleet was won by James Hutton-Penman, ILCA 6/Laser Radial, who beat Duncan De Boltz, ILCA 7/Laser, Duncan aiming for revenge in the John Torrance Trophy to be contested on Wednesday evening.
The Fast Handicap fleet was categorically won by BSC sailors Alice Davis and Jemma Cook, RS200, ahead of Richard Smith and John Barnes's Albacore, while Noah Mathers and Rory Luddington won the Slow Handicap Fleet, after a stint with fast dinghies, with Arthur Bullen winning the young sailor of the weekend.
In the Osprey fleet, Roger and Jamie Blake, representing the Great Moor Sailing Club, won first place, with Robert Shaw and Ian Little, Kielder Water SC/RCYC the runners up.
The Phantoms, sailing today from the BSC start line, saw Richard Nurse, Northampton SC, take the win, with Alan Husk in second place.
In the 707 fleet, the multi-club A Tiller the Hun, skippered by Rory Munro, won the Rubber Ball trophy, as the winners of the Bank Holiday Sunday, along with the Phantom Trophy as the overall winners of the Bank Holiday Weekend. The Royal Burnham/Royal Corinthian skippered Cezanne won the Hunter 707 Bowl, as the Bank Holiday Monday winners, along with the Phillips Trophy, awarded to the Bank Holiday runner ups. With 6 boats on the water and quite a few crews on a stand by list, the 707 class is seeing a resurgence in Burnham and hopes are high for an even stronger presence for next year.
Dan Wastage in Santa Evita won the Emmet Cup, the overall winner of the Bank Holiday Weekend for the Class 1 & 2, while Paul Trueman's Exile took the Paul Fleming Glass, as the Bank Holiday Weekend runner ups. The Burnham Team Trophy was won by the Burnham Sailing Club team, Slingshot, skippered by Nick Plank and Exile, skippered by Paul Trueman.
The class 5 fleet was swept clean by Phil Collard's Cobra, who won everything there was in play, including the Signet Salver as the winners of the Bank Holiday Weekend, leaving the Ella Dorothy Cup, for the Bank Holiday Weekend runner ups, John Saunders in Jeannie. The Bank Holiday Weekend Team Trophy, with three entries from the BSC, was won by BSC's' second team, John Saunders in Jeannie and Richard Taylor's Rondo.
Nick Wood's Origami won the Tolhurst Trophy, as the overall winner of the Bank Holiday, along with the Sabin Cup and Brent Walker Bowl for the Saturday and Sunday, while Nigel Stevens's Triassic won the Lakedale Trophy for the Bank Holiday runner ups.
The Prince Caroline Bowl, for the winner of the RS Elites Bank Holiday Weekend, was won by Bill Blank on Blind Squirrel, while Excalibur, Roger Martin, was the runner up.
The International Dragons' Solent Points Trophy, for the winner of the Bank Holiday Weekend went to Mark Wade's Avalanche, while Ian Gray' Still Crazy took the Polly Pot, as the runner ups.
The Bank Holiday Monday almost produced a big upset for the Squib class, as Easy, helmed by Ben Hutton-Penman and crewed by Ian Brand, narrowly missed winning the weekend, being runner ups to Micky Wright and Alex Porteous' Spoof on countback, with Spoof being awarded the David Eagling Memorial Trophy, while Easy took home the Bengal Rifle Bowl.
Justin Waples, Cormorant, swept clean the three Bank Holiday Weekend Royal Corinthian One Design races, for the Silver Tankard, while Clive and Graeme Page's Corpo Santo was the runner up, being awarded the RCYC RCOD Tankard.
The Royal Burnham One Design fleet had a different winner on each of the Bank Holiday days, with Stephen Herring's Red Jacket being awarded the Vaurnine Cup for Saturday, James Dallimore's Whimbrel winning the Diamond Jubilee Cup for Sunday, Chris Corrigan's Phalarope taking the Streaker Cup for Monday, while the Wylie Patterson Cup for the Bank Holiday overall winners went to Whimbrel.
The East Coast One Design Burnham Week Tankard, trophy dated 1928, was awarded to Ian Wilson's Widgeon, while the ECOD Whitsun Goblet, the winner of Bank Holiday Weekend went to David Smith's Wizard.
The Bank Holiday Weekend can be considered nothing other than a great success, with more than 120 competing boats, plenty of young faces on most fleets, a few old faces making a comeback, quite a few guests and a resurgent class, the 707s.
Burnham Week continues with more trophies to compete for, with races every day, including the dinghies' John Torrance Trophy to be sailed on Wednesday evening at the Burnham Sailing Club with perfect viewing conditions from the town promenade, the prestigious Town Cup and the dinghies Town Cup, on the last Saturday of the regatta and the St Mathew Cup, the traditional inter club competition, on the Sunday following Burnham Week.
