49er/49erFX World Championship in Argentina - Day 4

by International 49er Class 20 Nov 2015 09:31 NZDT 16-21 November 2015

Day 4 of the 2015 World Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina has been completed as the surrounding area has been inundated with thunderstorms and high winds since around midday.

Silver fleet was sent out to a morning of cloudy skies and winds around 10 knots and building, shifting more and more East, then South East. A storm system rolled in just as the fleets were finishing their first and only race of the day. Winds built to gusting strength and a downpour of rain flooded the area. Many boats took down their main sails to accommodate coach boat tow-ins, while some were unluckily forced into capsizing.

Gold fleet stood tentatively on shore awaiting the arrival of fellow Silver fleet sailors and further instructions. Racing was called for the day at about 2:30pm and will resume with Gold fleet starting the day tomorrow morning at 10am.

The 2015 49er & 49erFX World Championship is in Buenos Aires, Argentina from November 16-21, 2015 The event website including results is 49er.org/event/2015-world-championship and the event is sponsored by Seiko, SAP, and Magic Marine.

No racing for Burling and Tuke (from Yachting New Zealand)

Thunderstorms and rain squalls meant no racing for either the men's and women's gold fleet on day four of the 2015 49er and 49erFX World Championships on now in Argentina.

The official report says, "Racing was called for the day at about 2:30pm and will resume with Gold fleet starting the day tomorrow morning at 10am."

With no racing possible for the front runners it means that Peter Burling and Blair Tuke carry their 17 point leading margin into the penultimate day of the title deciding regatta.

There is also no change in the standings for Alexandra Maloney and Molly Meech over in the women's 49erFX division and they head into day five lying 9th overall.

No Gold fleet racing (from Australian Sailing)

No Gold fleet racing took place on day four of the 2015 49er/FX World Championships in Argentina after winds built to gusting strength and a downpour of rain flooded the area.

Racing was called off for the day at about 2:30pm local time and will resume with Gold fleet starting from 10am on Friday local time (midnight AEDT/ AEDT=+14hrs).

Thus there will be no changes in the current standings with all Australian Sailing crews having qualified for Gold fleet finals racing after three days of qualifying.
