Laser, 49ers, 470’s and two fastest yachts in the southern hemisphere

by Rob Kothe and the Sail-World Team on 14 May 2012
Outteridge and Jensen on the final day of the 2012 49er World Championships Nikola Sisko
Congratulations to our Lake Macquarie locals Nathan Outteridge and Iain ‘Goobs’ Jensen who sailed a strong tactical last day to take their third 49er Worlds title. They sailed with a black card on their sail, in honour of Australian and Kiwi sailing icon Frank Bethwaite who had died the previous day.

Five times Laser World Champion Tom Slingsby who sailed his medal race with a strapped ankle, after rolling it the night before, is skipping the upcoming AC45 event and will no doubt very keen to produce his winning form at Sail for Gold in Weymouth.

Starting the way they no doubt mean to go on 470 World Champions Matt Belcher and Malcolm Page won their first race at the 2012 Worlds in Barcelona and dual Olympic Gold medallists Elise Rechichi and Belinda Stowell took a fifth.

We are getting ready to send out our next Olympic coverage newsletter in the next week, to some 140,000 readers. The windsurfing/kite surfing discussions have been quite earnest.

The Queensland Season of Sailing is ramping up. We will be in Mooloolaba for the Etchells Midwinters in a few weeks, just after Sanctuary Cove Boat Show.

Later on in the season 2012 Airlie Beach Race Week is going to be amazing – the two fastest yachts in the southern hemisphere - the two ORMA 60’s - Sean Langman’s Team Australia, the boat that smashed the 2012 Brisbane to Gladstone Race record coming to do battle with 2011 Airlie Beach Race Week sensation Kiwi Simon Hull’s big red Team Vodafone Sailing.

Measure twice. Cut once.
Perhaps even measured thrice? Yes. On reflection, I think we can absolutely lock that one in. Perhaps even measured thrice? Yes. On reflection, I think we can absolutely lock that one in.
