29er Eurocup - The final day, Riva del Garda

by Elena Giolai on 2 Nov 2010
A beautiful inaugural day at the 29er Eurocup concludes today at Fraglia Vela Riva. In the following days the sun was just a memory as heavy rain continued to fall, but Trentino Garda and the technical organizers at Fraglia Vela Riva had guaranteed wind and where there’s wind, there’s racing! - 29er Eurocup, Riva del Garda-Italy Elena Giolai
29er Eurocup - The final day of the 29er Eurocup with all scheduled races completed despite bad weather.

Victory for the Goerge sisters of Germany, silver for Croatians Fizulic-Ostrez and a great recovery for Italians Andrea and Alessandro Savio, bronze.

14 races were scheduled and 14 were completed in four days of intense competition at Fraglia Vela Riva for this edition of the 29er Eurocup. Even with today’s heavy rain the north wind prevailed at 12 to 14 knots. It was a nail -biting finish for Germans Jule and Lotta Goerge who had, on Saturday, established a comfortable lead over Croatians Fizulic-Ostrez, but had then seen that lead eaten away over the following days until finally there were only two points between them and the Croatians, who took second place. Credit due though, to the German sisters, who showed consistent form throughout the event (apart from a 21st in the second last race, which was discarded). A great recovery for Italians Andrea and Alessandro Savio, who after a penalization for an OCS came through with excellent results in their subsequent races to give them the bronze medal. Today’s races gave them a third, a second, a 10th and a first.

There has been a great sense of achievement by the organizing staff at Fraglia Vela Riva in this the last Regatta of the season. 50 skiffs participated from ten different countries and all the races set by the Regatta board were completed. This has been a technical success, which has rewarded the efforts of everyone involved from the water staff to the people in the office. All the participants were very happy that they were able to race in safety even though the weather conditions were pretty bad during the last couple of days. The Regatta Committee and technical staff were always ready to position and perfect the race areas. To all of you a big loud THANK YOU.

NB: We would like to thank all of those who have followed us during our 2010 competition season. Fraglia Vela Riva and me, the undersigned, in charged of the press releases, have endeavoured to fulfil l our work with passion and dedication for everyone, sailors, competitors and logistical staff. Thanks to everyone for the important role they played, journalists, coaches, parents and competitors.
