SOS Ocean Racing circumnavigation - Still stuck in the Southern Ocean

by SOS Media on 31 May 2010
Day 27 - Save Our Seas Ocean Racing SW
SOS Ocean Racing's Ian Thomson is now 27 days in and is only a few days from Tasmania. Surprisingly still stuck in a high-pressure system with winds coming NW, by know he expected them to have changed.

At this stage Ian is not quite sure what the weather is doing, ‘ I feel like the Southern Ocean has still not shown its face and I am a little worried that with the light winds a storm is brewing up!' With winds only gusting up to 12 knots his progress has been slow, yesterday Ian only covered 125 nm. Ian still has 700 nm to reach the bottom of Tasmania, which puts him half way through the Southern Ocean.

Yesterday Ian was running the A3 spinnaker all day, only bringing it down at night as the speed dropped off.

Ian is now concerned about not finishing under 40 days as he will have to go on reserved food (two minutes noodles). ‘I am keen to get home, I have plenty of water, but I'm really not looking forward to only eating reserved food'.

The only problem besides water getting in the boat for Ian is the port rudder. It has been moving around a bit and not making the most pleasant bumping noise. It not something Ian can look at while he is in the Southern Ocean so he is hoping it will survive.

Ian would like to do a shout out to Jamie Dunross who is currently located in Airlie Beach and hope he is enjoying himself. Jamie wants to become the first quadriplegic yachtsman to sail around the world single handed and unassisted. Ian hopes he can catch up with him as he feel what he is doing is amazing, so check him out solo1.com.au

SOS Ocean Racing is about raising awareness of what damage plastic bags does to the environment, in particular the marine environment. With over 100,000 marine animals and 1 million sea birds dying from plastic suffocation or entanglement every year, it is time to get rid of the 'Convenient' plastic bag and use other options.
