Skandia Geelong Week Update

by Skandia Geelong Week on 31 Jul 2007
Skandia Geelong Week 2007 Royal Geelong Yacht Club on Saturday morning Teri Dodds http://www.teridodds.com

'Skandia Geelong Week 2008 is shaping up to be the best ever with a definite buzz around the waterfront, with a lot of interest from interstate yachts looking to take part in the event.' says Principal Race officer Denis Thompson.

'Skandia Geelong Week is the first event in the Audi IRC Championships for 2008 and this should entice a number of crews from around Australia to compete.

'This year there will be six course areas to be raced on, these are: North and South Inner Corio Bay, North and South Outer Corio Bay, Stingaree Bay for Off-the-Beach boats, inner Corio Bay fixed mark course and outer Corio Bay fixed mark course.

'Also worth noting is a bunch of hot new IRC boats in the Port Philip area. Victoria must now possess the best IRC fleet in Australia.

'Sydney 38 One Designs are returning to race for their Australian Championships on Corio Bay, with both inner and outer courses to challenge the fleet during the event.

'Williamstown will have two days of racing on two separate course areas, both doing windward / leeward courses.

'The Passage Race will again be held on Australia Day and much consideration and thought has gone into the start of the race. Based on previous years, we have carefully studied and made changes to the start to make it as safe as possible when there is a fresh northerly breeze blowing.

'With so much activity during the event we are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help on the water. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact RGYC for details on (03) 5229 3705 or via email on info@rgyc.com.au.

'We expect to have the Notice of Race out shortly and will advise as soon as its on-line.'

'I look forward to seeing you at Skandia Geelong Week in January.'

SB3’s heading to Skandia Geelong Week

The world’s fastest growing one design class is heading to Australia with 20 new boats due to arrive late August. The class is endeavouring to stage their inaugural Australian Championship in January 2008 during Skandia Geelong Week, and several international crews have expressed strong interest in chartering.

'This is great news for Skandia Geelong Week and the sport. Hosting the SB3 class will open up all kinds of opportunities and bring an international flavour to the event. More and more UK based sailors want to experience our event, but we have struggled to accommodate their needs in terms of a suitable boat. Now we have a one design class they are familiar with I am confident we will see more Union Jacks flying on backstays in 2008', an excited Chairman of Skandia Geelong Week John Kint said.

Oceanburo, the Queensland based company bringing the fleet of twenty to Australia, plan to offer coaching sessions and will make six SB3’s permanently available in Mooloolaba for the purpose of match and fleet racing events.

The SB3 is a 6.15m sportsboat that is capable of being launched from a yard crane or trailer and is easy to tow with a maximum towing weight of 900kg. The SB3 has a capacity of four and a maximum crew weight of 270kg. The boat is ideal for mixed sailing teams, offering high performance asymmetric sailing within strict one-design rules.

An SB3 will set you back $49,990, which includes a trailer allowing you to set sail with ease. For more information on SB3’s please visit www.oceanburo.com.au or phone Kai Timm on 0404 094 244

Measure twice. Cut once.
Perhaps even measured thrice? Yes. On reflection, I think we can absolutely lock that one in. Perhaps even measured thrice? Yes. On reflection, I think we can absolutely lock that one in. So then, let's consider all this. Now that initial quantum was keeping the ambition in check. No headlines. No elongated rig. No overtly aggressive sail plan.
