Colin Beashel named flag bearer for Australian Olympic team

Star class sailor Colin Beashel (AIS/NSWIS) has been named flag bearer for the 2004 Australian Olympic team, and will lead the Aussie contingency into the stadium for the opening ceremony on Friday night.

The announcement was made this morning (Sydney time) at the team welcome reception, which was attended by the entire Australian team, as well as many famous past Olympians. Sydney 2000 flag bearer, Basketballer Andrew Gaze, officially handed the flag over to Beashel during the reception.

After the announcement Beashel commented, 'I’m delighted and honoured to be named flag bearer by the AOC.'

Beashel's Olympic achievements include six Olympic Games, including a Bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games, which he won with crew mate David Giles (AIS/NSWIS).

A long time member of RPAYC at Pittwater, 'Beasho' was also in the afterguard of the successful 1983 American's Cup crew and is a former Etchells and 5.5 Metre World champion amongst his numerous sailing achievements.

The team welcome reception also featured Delta Goodrem singing the National anthem.

Colin and crew member David Giles, will begin competition on Saturday 21st August.
