Royal Langkawi Yacht Club gets a makeover

The Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC) is planning to redevelop its club and marina to enhance its facilities and services, to better serve the needs of the sailing and yachting community in the region and beyond. RLYC, located on the mystical island of Langkawi in the northwest of peninsular Malaysia, is positioned as the ideal stopover for travellers whether by land or sea. Established 18 years ago, the Club has acquired its status as a prime destination for sailors by providing world-class marina and berthing facilities as well as food and beverage services in an idyllic island setting.

'RLYC has a long history and while we intend to maintain the traditions that have been established, we believe that redeveloping will enable us to provide our loyal clientele, and future clients, with what they deserve, which are world-class marina facilities and boutique hospitality services,' said Executive Director and General Manager, Wicky Sundram.

The redevelopment works are scheduled to begin in February 2015 and the Club is expected to be fully operational again at the end October 2015 [just in time for the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta!]. The redevelopment will include a new three-storey block of shop lots, with – inter alia – F&B and boutique retail outlets.

The main clubhouse will also undergo major refurbishment, and Level 1 will see a grand Lobby and Reception area. A completely new concept will take over Level 2, and will feature eight boutique rooms for guest accommodations, four of which will have balconies overlooking the ocean and marina.

The project will involve redevelopment of the marina, including the expansion of mega-yacht berths. The marina will be fitted out with new power systems, sanitation pumps, safety equipment and additional berths.

In order to accommodate the RLYC redevelopment project, club facilities at RLYC will temporarily cease operations from early 16 February 2015 until the end of October 2015. Marina operations will continue.

Editor's Note: Sharp-eyed regular visitors to RLYC with a taste for a cold beer will have noticed that Charlie's Place is not in the renderings... RLYC without Charlie's is just unthinkable. We asked the unflappable GM, Wicky Sundram, who told us that 'Charlie's Place will not disappear. It will most likely be located on the 1st floor, one floor above where the current Charlie’s is located. There will be a 6-meter cantilever extending out to the water/sea.' That means that you can still take in the scenery after an exhausting day on the water, watch the monitor ambling along the beach, and admire the sunset.

Wicky continues, 'Of course I will miss the current Charlie’s Place. We all will. That’s why on 15 February there will be a Closing Party to celebrate the good old Charlie’s Place and also the good old Charlie (as the late Tunku Abdullah was known to his friends).' We (Sail-World) probably won't make it across to Langkawi, but strongly recommend that it you can then you should.
