Richard Gladwell reports in his latest opinion piece that the America's Cup has taken another curious turn, with the news out late in the week that the America's Cup Event Authority had approached Bermuda to stage the 35th America's Cup.
The Bermuda bid is clearly aimed at the commercialization of the America's Cup, with scant regard for the dictates of the Deed of Gift.
With the Defenders attempting to take over the conduct of the Challenger Selection Series (formerly the Louis Vuitton Cup), and run the series of supporting regattas, one wonders where the next strange turn will come.
Certainly there does not seem to be any hurry to get a Protocol out, or Venue named for the event. Already eight months have passed. The Protocol for the 34th America's Cup was announced seven months after the conclusion of the 33rd Match - and that came off the back of a two and a half year Court case and the accompanying acrimony, which all but destroyed the event.
By the 2016 Olympic Games Brazil will not make good on its commitment to clean up Rio de Janeiro's sewage-filled Guanabara Bay, state environmental officials have now acknowledged.
Last month Sail-World reported an admission by the Rio environment department that 800,000 tonnes a day of effluent flows into the river system that ends in Guanabara Bay.
In the May 7 letter addressed to Sports Minister Aldo Rebelo, Rio's state environment secretary, Carlos Francisco Portinho, asks for more funding for pollution control efforts and admits that at current investment rates, it will take more than a decade to significantly reduce the levels of pollution in Guanabara Bay, where the Olympic sailing events and rowing are to be held.

Balmy Sydney Autumn weather – beautiful sunny days with temperatures up to seven degrees above average, however yesterday was a different story for Race three of the Land Rover Winter Series, with light conditions and overcast conditions killing the breeze, so the focus shifted to eating and drinking, rather than sailing action.
By way of Winter series contrast three foiling 33ft catamarans raced yesterday in Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron's Winter Series, Race 1. We have images today.
Lots more news today.
