Shark Ed program being offered for Florida classrooms

Hundreds of newly designed 'Sharks of the World' marine education posters will soon be making their way into Florida classrooms in 2014 —courtesy of renown marine wildlife artist and conservationist Guy Harvey.

The education poster and statewide distribution is largely funded with money generated by sales of the 2013 Guy Harvey Florida Lottery scratch-off game, according to Antonio Fins, Executive Director of the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation.

'In support of our marine awareness and education efforts, we will be soon distributing free posters for display in high and middle school science classrooms, and elementary school media centers,' said Fins. 'Our goal is to have several copies of this poster in every school across the state. It’s a great tool for teachers to use in the classroom to spark interest among students in science, and marine science specifically.'

Fins said the poster, which will illustrate 19 shark species, will also provide students with additional information, including a website created by the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University to follow the progress of sharks that have been tagged and released for satellite tracking. In addition, teachers can sign up to show Guy Harvey’s Tiger Shark Express documentary, which is based on five years of science learned by shark tagging and tracking. Teachers may also sign up for Skype presentations on shark tagging and tracking by an NSU researcher.
