Luckily sailors have short memories, the bars in Hobart in late December prove that, so the fact that all but the last day of the 2013 Abell Point Marina Airlie Beach Race Week has been very light, will soon be forgotten. It’s been a perfect breeze for the final day of the race around Pioneer Bay, news on the days sailing and the overall results later.
Yachting Australia Vice President Matt Allen probably sails at more regattas in more boats than any other skipper in the Asia Pacific. He has been campaigning a Beneteau 44.7 and an IRC modified Adams 10 in Asia, a Farr 400 on the Australian regatta circuit and the IRC modified Volvo 70 offshore, all called Ichi Ban (number one in Japanese) and now his new 60 footer is in progress.
We sat down with the former CYCA Commodore at the 2013 Abell Point Marina Airlie Beach Regatta.
‘Lisa, my wife, and I figured we were spending so much money on the boat that we had better save money on the crew gear so I think we are going to call it Ichi Ban.
‘I was quite keen to have a boat that is considerably more powerful that say a TP52 for ocean racing, utilizing modern sail shapes but also for the Hobart race a boat that would on the average race arrive in the afternoon rather than the evening or very early morning hours. The 30th anniversary Louis Vuitton Cup Final commences Saturday with Emirates Team New Zealand taking on Italy’s Luna Rossa Challenge. The two teams also met in the previous Louis Vuitton Cup Final, in Valencia, Spain, in 2007, and Emirates Team New Zealand came out on top.
The upcoming series is a best-of-13, meaning the first to score seven points will be the winner. Two, five-leg races are planned per day, the first start scheduled at 1:10 pm PT and the second at 2:10 pm. Each race will last approximately 25 minutes, and there’ll be a break of about 30 minutes between races. This same format will be used next month in the America’s Cup Final.
As we at Sail-World feared might happen Yachting NSW has announced the cancellation of the second Grade One Olympic Classes regatta in Australia, the 2013 Sail Sydney regatta.
Sail Sydney began as a test event for the 2000 Olympics and has grown in recent years to be the dinghy event with the largest number of participants in the Southern hemisphere. Over 475 boats competed in the 2012 edition.
However the event was always low profile and we were always concerned that sponsors would be as a result hard to find and so it has proven. We hope that 2014 will its return.
For us, we are heading to Hamilton Island in the morning and after that we are going north to Sail Townsville including Magnetic Island Race Week.
