2026 iQFOiL Open European Championships in Portimão - Day 1

by iQFOiL Class Association 18 May 12:16 PDT 18-23 May 2026

The 2026 iQFOiL Open European Championships officially got under way today in Portimão, Portugal, hosted by Clube Naval de Portimão.

From May 18 to 23, a fleet of 192 competitors representing 42 nations will battle over six days of racing in one of the season's most important events on the international iQFOiL calendar.

Set in the heart of Portugal's Algarve region, Portimão offers one of Europe's most iconic race venues for wind and water sports. The race area, located off Praia da Rocha near the historic Santa Catarina Fortress, combines Atlantic swell with reliable northwesterly thermal breezes, creating a technically demanding racecourse for the Olympic windfoil discipline.

Monday's opening races were held in a steady northwesterly breeze ranging between 12 and 15 knots, gradually building throughout the afternoon and allowing the championship to begin under solid racing conditions.

With the wind blowing from approximately 300 degrees, and the coastline and cliffs positioned to the right of the course, sailors faced highly tactical racing. The interaction between the Atlantic breeze and the coastal geography produced variations in pressure and stability across the race area, rewarding competitors capable of maintaining consistent speed while reading the constantly changing wind patterns.

In the Women's fleet, 19-year-old Tamar Steinberg (ISR 216), silver medalist at the 2025 World Championships in Aarhus, made an immediate impact by taking the overall lead after Day 1. The Israeli sailor posted an impressive series of 1, 4, 1 and 5, demonstrating remarkable consistency across all four races. China's Wenqi Li (CHN 17) sits in second place after a strong opening performance, while Norway's Maya Gysler (NOR 21), runner-up at the 2024 U23 World Championship, completes the provisional podium following a solid first day on the water.

In the Men's fleet, Great Britain's Finn Hawkins (GBR 19) takes the overnight lead after the opening races of the championship, showing excellent consistency with two race wins and a second-place finish in the three races completed so far. Defending European Champion Johan Søe (DEN 37) sits just behind in second place after a strong start to the regatta, while Dutch Olympic bronze medallist Luuc Van Opzeeland (NED 55) holds third overall. Among the Under 23 sailors, Britain's Duncan Monaghan (GBR 18) and Spain's Nacho Baltasar Summers (ESP 1) both impressed on Day 1, placing seventh and ninth overall respectively in the highly competitive fleet.

Portimão has welcomed the 192 sailors last night with a beautiful Opening Ceremony, and after today, the championship now moves into its second day, with the fleet expected to face another mix of Atlantic breeze, swell and tactical complexity as the battle for the European titles continues in Portimão.
