iQFOiL Youth & Junior European Championships - Day 1

by iQFOiL Communications 19 Oct 10:58 PDT 18-25 October 2025

The 2025 iQFOiL Youth & Junior European Championships officially got under way today in Arzachena, North Sardinia, with 306 athletes from 28 nations ready to battle it out on the pristine waters of this beautiful area.

Hosted by Club Nautico Arzachena, the regatta opened under clear skies and a steady breeze, setting the tone for a spectacular week of foiling competition.

The day began with a comprehensive briefing led by Principal Race Officer Ewa Jodlowska and iQFOiL Class Manager Gonzalo Costa Hoevel, who welcomed the international fleet, clarified event protocols and safety guidelines, and reviewed the racing formats ahead. This thorough introduction ensured all teams were aligned before heading out to the water.

By midday, a thermal breeze from the east-northeast settled over the bay, providing ideal conditions for racing. With winds ranging between 8 and 11 knots, sailors were able to compete on a moderate sea state, perfect for clean foiling and tactical decision-making.

Racing began at 15.30 with the U19 Men's fleet, who contested four high-intensity heats in the Sprint Slalom format, a short, explosive course that demands precision, speed and control. The large fleet of 100 sailors was split into two groups, racing on separate course areas to ensure fair and efficient management.

Turkey's Artun Senol emerged as the standout of the day, delivering a perfect scoreline with four wins from four races. Denmark's Malthe Lillelund followed closely with three victories, while Israel's Peleg Rajuan showed impressive consistency to sit in third overall. Italy's Mattia Saoncella, bronze medalist at the 2025 World Championships, ended the day in 8th, leaving plenty of room to climb the leaderboard.

In the U17 Boys' division, only one race could be completed before the breeze faded. With six heat winners, František Burda (CZE), Beau Handley and Milo Shaw (GBR), Moritz Schleicher (GER), Idan Lichtenstein (ISR), and Jan Serafinski Melsztynski (POL), the top of the table is tightly contested heading into Day 2.

No races were held today for the U19 Women and U17 Girls, heightening anticipation for tomorrow's action when these fleets are set to make their championship debut.

With its sparkling waters, stunning backdrop, and the energy of Europe's top young foilers, Arzachena delivered a promising opening day. The 2025 iQFOiL Youth & Junior European Championships are officially under way, with skill, determination, and high-speed action set to define the days ahead.
