Argentario Sailing Week 2025 at Yacht Club Santo Stefano - Day 1

by Joseph Sawyer 19 Jun 12:10 PDT 18-25 June 2025

Argentario Sailing Week is off to a flying start! A perfect sample of the Argentario's typical summer beauty brought idyllic weather conditions to the first day of the international regatta reserved exclusively for vintage and classic yachts.

A picturesque beginning to ring in the 24th edition of the event, organised by the Yacht Club Santo Stefano with the support of the Municipality of Monte Argentario. A reliable westerly breeze of 8 knots, increasing after the start to 13, accompanied calm seas, ensuring the races ran smoothly along 16 miles of coastal racecourse between Talamone and the Argentario, and allowing all competitors from 9 nations to conclude their races to satisfaction.

Today's winners:

  • Big Boats: HALLOWE'EN - Inigo Strez (NZL)
  • Classic IOR: MATRERO - Rafael Pereira Aragon (ARG)
  • Classic: CRIVIZZA - Ariella Cattai (ITA)
  • Vintage: SPARTAN (USA)
  • Vintage Marconi: LEONORE - Mark Faulkner (GBR)
  • Cruiser Yachts: VISTONA - Gian Battista Borea d'Olmo (ITA)
  • Spirit of Tradition-Open: LULUNIKKA - Roberto Lacorte (ITA)

Marco Poma, Sports Director and Vice President of the Yacht Club Santo Stefano, commented on what he witnessed directly on the water today, both as a keen spectator and as a director actively engaged in the event's organisation: "The right start with the right balance: this is how I would sum up this first day at sea. The course involved a balanced mix of gaits with a first section battled upwind followed by a downwind portion that charged into a final, more technical section, upwind again and very close to shore.

"I was particularly impressed by Spartan's performance, the NYYC 50 ft by Herreshoff. Their tactician is Peter Isler, a sailor who can boast five America's Cups under his belt, two of which he won and one of which he spent as tactician for Dennis Conner. The rest of the today's spectacle was provided by the crews who, aboard these timeless queens of the sea, sailed with great sportsmanship and fair play."

The Argentario Sailing Week: a story of passion, tradition and success

The history of the Argentario Sailing Week begins in 1992, when a group of members of the Yacht Club Santo Stefano organised a regatta for classic yachts called Le Vele d'Argento (The Silver Sails). Over the years, the constant increase in registered boats, the area's hospitality and consistently favourable weather conditions eventually contributed to the event becoming a central date on the international calendar of classic and vintage yacht regattas.

In 1999 the event took on the name we know today: Argentario Sailing Week, confirming its role as a high-profile regatta and, at the same time, as a moment of refined culture and hospitality, where passion, history and craftsmanship come together on the Mediterranean, in the sublime setting of Monte Argentario.
