P&B and Zhik Fireball National Championships 2025 at Looe Sailing Club - Overall

by Adam Whitehouse 31 May 07:33 PDT 24-27 May 2025

Day 4 of the P&B Zhik Nationals. With the first two positions already decided, Tom and Shandy, and Vyv and DJ had already packed up their boats by the time the remaining 15 or so hardy souls decided to venture out for one last race.

The forecast was daunting, but at 10am it was a steady 15 knots, and the brilliant race committee, who had been excellent all week, granted us our 8th race. We started bang on 11am, and by then the wind was already up to 20 knots. The first beat was a ripper, and the boat was moving so quickly. Everything happened so fast, and by the time we had crossed the fleet heading towards the windward mark, I realised we hadn't checked what the course was. Luckily, we came into the windward mark on a slight header, which gave me the opportunity to duck Christine Willcocks and Graham Slater, who rounded in first place.

The downwind section was just a blur of speed and a safe gybe, but others who had gybed earlier, including Dave and Paul, Peter and Rich, and Paul and Simon, got a better run into the bottom mark to finish in that order after a 7-minute race. The committee had wisely decided the wind was now on the limit, with several boats capsizing, including Mike and me.

So that wrapped it up for another year - a fabulous event with a feel-good factor throughout the boat park and the bar. Everyone is now looking forward to Garda, with early bird entry expiring on the 31st of May.

So overall another fantastic event in the books one which saw another epic dual between Tom and Andy and DJ and Vyv. Massive well done to Tom and Shandy on another win, also DJ and Vyv in and pushing them close, and the legends Dave and Paul in their new boat in Fireballs.
