LOOKOUT, the AI pioneer in marine safety, adds more features to its augmented reality system for total situational awareness.

Building on its ability to detect hazards, day or night, with state-of-the-art computer vision, LOOKOUT has added three new features: AIS flags, navigational aid annotations and points-of-interest pins. The software upgrade is available for free as an over-the-air update.

For AIS data, LOOKOUT integrates with all AIS receivers over the NMEA 2000 network to display vessel name and country of origin flags flying above the vessels. Mariners rely on this system, especially in low light or fog. LOOKOUT provides a count-down for time-to-closest approach based on closing speed for potential collision risks.

LOOKOUT now includes over 15,000 buoy and marker locations directly from NOAA, then shows directional arrows above these to help boaters avoid running aground. This head-up-display visualization is the simplest way to navigate complicated harbors. LOOKOUT is the first and only system that offers this glanceable view in augmented reality.

Lastly, LOOKOUT filters Google’s national database of points of interest (POIs) to show pins over locations relevant to boaters: waterfront restaurants, fuel docks, anchorages and sightseeing locations.

“We’ve been testing these first-of-a-kind features all summer and boaters love them,” said David Rose, CEO of LOOKOUT. “A forward-facing camera view painted with information is a great complement to the traditional top-down chart view. LOOKOUT fuses all the important situational awareness data into one intuitive view.”

LOOKOUT is built by a radically diverse team of AI researchers, video game developers, 3D designers, and hardware engineers. The system uses AI to detect and track marine hazards, such as other vessels, buoys, debris, whales and even people in the water. LOOKOUT combines data from computer vision, charts, AIS and online sources into a clear, 3D augmented reality view. This reduces the captain's cognitive load and enhances situational awareness to make decision-making more efficient. LOOKOUT displays on modern MFDs from Garmin, Furuno, Raymarine, Simrad, tablets and smartphones.

The LOOKOUT camera retails for $3,995. Customers can choose between the LOOKOUT Brain for $4,995 and the Brain PRO for $9,995. The PRO version offers a higher frame rate and resolution to detect smaller, more distant targets. The company is exhibiting at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in booth #626.
