Balancing Act tips scales in Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race

by Nic Douglass 24 Jun 2024 05:48 UTC

Balancing Act has tipped the scales in the Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race to take the overall win on IRC, IRC two-handed, ORC and ORC two-handed. The J/99 co-skippered by Tony Craner and Andrew Turnbull-MIller finished with an IRC corrected time of just under an hour and thirteen minutes over next placed Ignition.

First to finish, Alive crossed the line in the 343 nautical mile Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race at 17:38:31 on Saturday 22 June to take line honours with a race time of 2 days, 3:32:31. Duncan Hine and Glenn Mylar, sailing the RP66 double handed, held a commanding lead for the full length of the course, navigating some tricky conditions for a sound performance.

"This is the first time Alive has done a two handed race. 360 miles with fickle winds, whales, islands, coral reefs and ships. All done with my mate Cousin Glenn", said Duncan Hine.

"What a great adventure!"

The second boat to finish, Mayfair, the Rogers 46 skippered by James Irvine, came in at 22:05:33 on Saturday 22 June. Less than an hour behind them was Drew Carruthers' Ker 40 Showdown. Becky Maloney, the navigator on board Showdown, was the winner of the Paul Florian Trophy (Navigators prize).

Early morning on Sunday 23 June, Balancing Act and Ignition finished within nine minutes of each other, the ultimately unbeatable clubhouse leaders.

Al Harrison's Seaquest RP 36 Lisdillon crossed the line early on Sunday morning. Last across the line Chai finished at 00:05:44 on Monday 24 June. The Scott Willmett skippered Jarkan C202's time of 3 days 09:59:44 was enough to give them the win on fully-crewed PHS, exemplifying the ability through the fleet.
