The Ocean Race's Newport In-Port Race Postponed Until Sunday

Due to deteriorating weather, the In-Port Race in Newport which was scheduled for this Saturday 20 May at 14:10 local time (20:10 CEST) has been postponed and will take place on Sunday, ahead of the start of Leg 5.

Safety is a top priority for The Ocean Race. With a forecast for increasing winds, deteriorating visibility and rain squalls with very strong gusts, it has been decided to postpone the In-Port Race until Sunday.

The weather forecast is for good racing conditions on Sunday and the In-Port Race will be incorporated into the race course for the Leg 5 start.

Leg 5 of The Ocean Race starts on Sunday 21 May 2023 at 14:15 local time (18:15 UTC, 20:15 CEST). The fleet will sail 3,500 nautical miles to Aarhus, Denmark in a race expected to last 10 to 12 days and counting for double-points.

Boris Herrmann is back as skipper of Malizia - Seaexplorer, and will sail with co-skippers Yann Eliès, Will Harris and Rosalin Kuiper, along with onboard reporter Antoine Auriol. Team Malizia is currently in joint second place in the overall scoreboard, only 1 point behind the leader.

Leg 5 - Newport to Aarhus - The Start

Racing is scheduled is start at 2:15pm local time / 1815 UTC. There will not be a separate In Port Race, instead, the inshore section of the start will have a leaving gate that will act as a finish line to record positions before the boats head offshore towards Aarhus. The leaving gate positions will be the Newport In Port Race.

The start will be broadcast on Eurosport / Discovery+ in Europe and Asia. The start will be shown on The Ocean Race YouTube Channel in the USA and other select territories
