Winter is upon us but that doesn't mean your boating season is over. All you need is a little imagination and maybe a trailer for your Boston Whaler and you can be boating year-round.

Let's look at the best places to boat in the winter whether you're up for exciting fishing or a fun family getaway, based on where you live.

South Florida and the Caribbean

If you're lucky enough to live where water doesn't freeze and boats don't have to be winterized, then you're likely already aware: The Florida Keys are a great tropical destination that will warm you up any time of year. Islamorada, Marathon, Kay Largo and Key West are known for great fishing so dip your hook for mahi mahi, yellowtail or wahoo.

If you have a bigger, offshore-capable Boston Whaler, take a run out to Bimini in the Bahamas about 60 miles east of Miami for a little Caribbean island flavor. Or, if you're more comfortable on the Gulf side, launch your boat in St. Petersburg and check out the sites of Tampa Bay.

SoCal and the American Southwest

Southern California is also a boater's paradise, so take a run from Long Beach to Catalina Island for lunch or a day of great hiking. Enjoy the sites of San Diego Bay or drop the hook in Newport Harbor and dinghy to one of the great waterfront restaurants.

If you're more into a desert landscape, load your Boston Whaler onto a trailer and head inland to Lake Havasu south of Las Vegas on the border of Arizona or set a course to Utah and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area for the great rock formations of Lake Powell.

Inland South and Mid-Atlantic Seaboard

If you're in the middle of the country, check out Toledo Bend Reservoir in Texas, the Biloxi seashore in Mississippi or any part of Mobile Bay in Alabama. The Eastern Seaboard is busy in winter too from Charleston, South Carolina to Brunswick, Georgia and all the way down again to Florida in the Jacksonville area. There are plenty of lakes in this region too, so you don't have to stay coastal. Check out Lake Lanier in Georgia and Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana as a start.
