Noble Marine Allen RS600 National Championships at Brixham Yacht Club - Overall

by Ian Montague 13 Sep 2021 07:19 PDT 9-12 September 2021

Congratulations to George Smith, RS600 National Champion 2021 - a much deserved and popular first win!

The forecast for the fourth and final day of the RS600 Nationals at Brixham proved to be correct. The fleet was greeted to Torbay resembling a mill pond and after a brief postponement it was decided to draw the event to a close. However, the race committee had wisely fitted in an extra fourth race on Day 3 so in the end only one race was lost.

This resulted in our 2021 National Champion being George Smith. Throughout the event George consistently showed the best boat speed and tactics of the fleet and when considering he also has the added responsibility of being Class Chairman, his was a much deserved and popular first win. George was pushed hard by Jamie Mawson, whose results, including four wins, would in most years have been good enough to take the victory. 1st Master went to Ian Montague, finishing 4th overall. 1st Youth and 3rd overall went to Chris Haslam.

1st Lady to Emily Haslam. Emily sailed her first RS600 event superbly and used the smaller rig all week. It just goes to show the RS600 can be tamed for the lighter weights using the small rig option. We would really like to see more ladies giving the RS600 a go. The Silver Fleet went to Alex Piggott, definitely the last year in the Silvers for Alex as he was often seen right at the front and the Bronze Fleet went to Jamie Watson. Well done to all.

Although Covid restrictions limited the fleet size this year, all the competitors felt this to have been a fantastic event, especially with the near perfect wind and racing conditions of the first three days.

The class continues to be in a great place, with the square top black sails seeming to perform identically to the original sails whilst bringing the look of the boat bang up to date. Don't forget if you want to order one of those new sails for next year there is a 10% discount off this years prices for RS Class Association members for pre-orders taken before the 21st September so now is the time to place an order. New boats should be available again soon and the RS Sailing store is now the place to order your RS600 sails and spare parts.

Thank you to our sponsors Rooster and Allen who help to make the event possible and a big round of thanks to Brixham Yacht Club who put on such a great event. From the faultless race management to even the Commodore up to his neck catching competitors at the slip way, the RS600 Class would like to thank everyone at the club who helped.

Next year the RS600 Nationals will be at Weymouth as part of the RS Games, the Class is very welcoming to all newcomers and a really friendly bunch. We all know how tricky the initial learning curve of an RS600 can be, but we are here to help and attending a 600 event is the best place to get that help. The first Rooster National Tour event next year will eb a race and train weekend - perfect for those new to the class, as well as seasoned RS600 sailors looking tom improve their sailing.
