The 51 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Iberostar (Mallorca, 25th March to 4th April) will include the first edition of the Marine Forum, a congress in which Olympic sailors, institutions, environmental foundations and companies from the marine sector will discuss about the situation of our oceans and will put forward measures for their preservation.

The Marine Forum joins other environmental care actions included in the event's programme of activities in each edition. Just one month away from the start of the event, many of its protagonists are already training in waters of the bay of Palma.

The Marine Forum will be held at Hotel Iberostar Selection Llaut Palma on Wednesday 25th March, the official opening day of the 51 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Iberostar, one of the most prestigious international Olympic sailing events.

Organised by the Trofeo Princesa Sofía Iberostar with the collaboration of Illes Balears Sostenible, Iberostar with the brand Wave of Change and Marilles Foundation, the Marine Forum aims to become a broadcast of the commitment undertaken by sailors in the preservation of the oceans and furthermore, to act as a platform for change to promote other initiatives and find synergies with the marine business companies and the Administration.

"Two years ago, the Trofeo Princesa Sofía Iberostar started its environmental care plan and last year we teamed up with Wave of Change and Olympic sailors, the main ambassadors for the preservation of ocean environment", explains Race Manager, Ferran Muniesa. "This year we wish to provide another platform to make their voices heard, so that all together, we can warn Institutions, society and companies that time is running out. To make them aware that our oceans will continue to be a source of life, fun and economy only if we make a dramatic change in our way of thinking and in our actions".

One-day congress, two panel discussions

The congress will be divided in two panel discussions. The morning panel will bring together Institutions, experts in environmental preservation and Balearic marine business companies, some of them leaders at national and international level. The second panel discussion will meet in the afternoon and will have an international focus giving a voice to Olympic sailors taking part in the Trofeo Princesa Sofía Iberostar and leaders of interesting environment preservation actions.

Besides the representatives of Trofeo Princesa Sofía Iberostar, Iberostar's Wave of Change campaign and Marilles Foundation, confirmation of participation has also been received from representatives of the Illes Balears Government, the Chamber of Commerce of Mallorca, the Balearic Ports Authority and Ports IB, as well as Ocean Care, Ecomar Foundation and Impulsa Foundation.

The Marine business sector will be represented through the Asociación Patronal de Empresarios de Actividades Marítimas de Baleares and Astilleros de Mallorca.

The afternoon panel discussion will have the participation of Olympic sailors Hannah Mills, Yago Lange and Iago López, as ocean ambassadors. They will have the opportunity to have a debate with experts from IMEDEA (Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies), Ocean Care and Save the Med, together with World Sailing President, Kim Andersen.

Organised by Club Nàutic S'Arenal, Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa and Real Club Náutico de Palma with the support of the Balearic and Spanish sailing federations, the 51 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Iberostar will bring together, from 25th March to 4th April in the bay of Palma, around one thousand sailors from over 50 nations. Some of them are already in Mallorca training for the regatta, the first event of a crucial European season with the opportunity to secure a place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games at stake for many sailors.

One month to go

Besides the celebration of the Marine Forum, 25th March marks the official start of the 51 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Iberostar, with registration and equipment control day for the Dragon class that will start racing on 26th March.

The One-design classes will start on the following day and the ORC will join the regatta on the weekend of 28th and 29th March. From Monday 30th March, the ten Olympic classes will take over until Saturday 4th April with the celebration of the Medal Races, the final races with double points reserved to the best in each category.

The 51 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Iberostar has the collaboration of Marinepool, Armas Trasmediterránea, Europcar, Torqeedo and Palma Beach, the institutional support of the Balearic Government through the Balearic Islands Tourism Strategy Agency (AETIB), the Turisme Mallorca Foundation from Consell de Mallorca and Ports de Balears as well as Palma and Llucmajor city councils. Mallorca multinational hotel company Grupo Iberostar is the event's main sponsor since 2015.
