US Sailing announces 2020 Offshore Worlds U.S. Selection Procedures

by US Sailing 16 Jan 2020 13:32 PST 10-22 October 2020

US Sailing has published the Selection Procedures detailing U.S. athlete selection for World Sailing's inaugural Offshore World Championships in Valletta, Malta on October 10-22, 2020.

The 2020 Offshore World Championships will be raced in parallel with the Rolex Middle Sea Race in the L30 class sailboat.

World Sailing has announced plans to award quota places to individual countries and will be posting the Notice of Race in the near future. The Selection Procedures will be applied granted the U.S. qualifies for, or is awarded, one or more quota places by World Sailing.

To be eligible for consideration as the U.S. entry, teams must fulfill all the eligibility requirements, including the submission of an application, which opens on March 1, 2020. Eligible teams must also compete in the Mixed Two Person Event at the 2020 Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, starting on July 17 and hosted by the Chicago Yacht Club in the J88.

The process to select the U.S. entry will be a discretionary process detailed in the Selection Procedures.

The format of the World Championships will be one offshore race of approximately four days and three nights. This format matches the format proposed for the Mixed Offshore Keelboat event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Mixed Offshore sailing has received a surge in upcoming scheduled events around the world, including in the United States. This discipline in our sport is expected to continue to grow due to the inclusion of a Mixed Two Person Offshore Keelboat event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Sailing Competition for the first time.

The 2020 Hempel World Cup Series Miami, January 20-25, is partnering with the Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race to host a doublehanded offshore event this year.
