Inlands Summary by Alice Davis

The Inlands at Rutland was a great event and I really enjoyed it. The racing was very competitive throughout the event which was really good. On Saturday, we only managed to fit in two races due to the light winds so that was a bit annoying, however we did four races on Sunday which were very competitive. Overall, it was a fun event and I can't wait for the Feva worlds in Italy and Tera worlds in Sweden!

Sport Fleet Report by Freddie Sunderland

Saturday brought very light and shifty sailing conditions for the Sport Fleet at the Inland Championships at Rutland Water.

Race 1 got under way quickly with a clean start. Freddie Sunderland (Olton Mere) and Cameron Blamey (IOMYC) as race leaders rather enthusiastically started a third lap when only two were required. This allowed others to pass through before they realised their error. The race was won by Matthew Rayner (Yorkshire Dales), followed by Harry Rowlands (Rutland) and in third was Finlay Lomas-Clarke (Frensham Pond). Freddie followed in fourth once he rectified his mistake.

A short break followed. The sailors patiently waited and refuelled whilst the race committee waited for the wind to behave. Race 2 began with another clean start, yet due to unsteady winds some of the upwind legs felt more like reaches. Freddie Sunderland (Olton Mere) took the win on this race, very closely followed by Matthew Rayner (Yorkshire Dales), and Toby Thompson (Frensham Pond) took third spot which concluded the day's racing.

Sunday morning brought blue skies and light winds again. The sailors launched and faced a short delay whilst the wind settled and the race committee laid the course. Race 3 started with a single recall and the sailors set off having to avoid the fisherman on the inner loop of the course. Felix Stewart (Windermere) led the race from the start and took the win, followed by Freddie Sunderland (Olton Mere) and Zak Sanderson-Davies (Windermere).

Toby Thompson (Frensham Pond) took the win on race 4, followed by Fflur Pierce (Rydal Penrhos) and Matthew Rayner (Yorkshire Dales).

The wind picked up noticeably for Race 5 and saw some new leaders emerge. Harry West (Royal Lymington) sailed well to take the win. Mark Jenkins-Jauma (HISC) took second and Matthew Rayner (Yorkshire Dales) third.

The wind abated a little for the final race of the championship, on the last upwind Freddie Sunderland (Olton Mere) chose the starboard side of the gate which paid and gave him a good lead to the finish line. Finlay Lomas-Clarke (Frensham Pond) and Freddie MacLaverty (Llandudno) battled hard for second and third spots.

This meant that Freddie Sunderland (Olton Mere) took first overall, closely followed by Matthew Rayner (Yorkshire Dales) with only 2 points separating the pair. Finlay Lomas-Clarke took third place.

All the sailors had a fantastic weekend, huge thanks to Rutland for hosting so well and Nick Neve for being a great Race Officer. We are all looking forward the National Championships in Brightlingsea in August.
