Squib National Championship at Royal Torbay Yacht Club - Day 2

by Keith Davies 25 Jun 00:52 PDT 22-28 June 2019

The 51st Squib National Championships continued with light winds from the east dominating today's racing. RTYC Race officer, Bill Butcher, went even further out to sea in order to find consistent breeze which never really came.

The fleet eventually got away after U and Black Flag starts. First to the windward mark was Ghost Rider, Mike and Penny Fenwick from Weymouth SC who led down the run only to be overtaken by Squiggle, Jono Brown and Chris Dunn from Royal Corinthian YC approaching the bottom gate.

Very tricky wind shifts ensured multiple place changes behind on the next legs but ensured victory for Squiggle who continued to extend their lead to more than two minutes at the finish. Ghost Rider held on to second place just ahead of Guy Fawkes, Phil Aspinall and Howie Engel from RCYC. Both took advantage of shifts out to sea. A very difficult day's sailing.

Silver and Bronze fleet boats were well up in this race. First Silver was Aldebaran, Ian Jones and a Peter Jackson who came a very creditable 7th. First Bronze was Femme Fatale, Jill Fleming and Vincent Delaney from Royal St. George YC coming 11th.

51st anniversary position was won by Eclipse, Georgia Grice and Mark Briggs from Portsmouth. Today's sponsor was Holt who provided equipment prizes.
