The final event of the Sailingfast Scottish Optimist Traveller Series took place at Largs Sailing Club on 1-2 June 2019. This event also doubled as the Scottish Championships for both Optimists and Toppers.

Conditions on Saturday were just about perfect with sunshine and a good breeze that was challenging enough for the more experienced sailors but wasn't overwhelming for those just starting to race. Overcoming the strong tide was a key factor in getting a good start and it was tricky for sailors to stay on the line. Rory had a great day coming first in all four races with James and Alex just behind.

Sunday brought torrential rain and strong winds. There was a short postponement as it was difficult for the committee to lay the course in these conditions. After launching conditions gradually improved throughout the day. There were still strong gusts however and some of the newer sailors retired a bit early.

Brothers James and Rory fought it out with Rory winning in two of the three races. Alex was consistently third with William coming in forth. Tess sailed consistently and was top girl with Macy second and Cara third. Overall Rory was a well deserved first, also winning this year's Scottish Travellers Series. Ruaraidh was first junior.

A massive thank you to Largs Sailing Club for a fun weekend. We were made to feel very welcome. The Largs team on the water provided excellent photo and video coverage of the sailing via WhatsApp throughout the weekend so all on shore could keep fully up to date. The pasta and sweets after sailing were really appreciated. Thank you to the race office and all volunteers for running a great event and to Sailingfast for sponsoring us.

The Scottish Optimist fleet are looking forward to a variety of events including the chance to try some different boats at the transition weekend at Loch Venachar on 8-9 June 2019 and to the IOCA UK National Championships at WPNSA this summer.
