Coast Guard invites public to tour Maine lighthouses

by U.S. Coast Guard 1st District Northeast 8 Sep 2018 06:58 PDT 8 September 2018

The public is invited to visit and tour the towers and keeper's houses of 24 Maine lighthouses from Biddeford to Lubec, Maine, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

As part of Maine's Open Lighthouse Day, some lights not normally open to the public include Curtis Island Light in Camden Harbor; Dyce Head Light in Castine; Monhegan Island Light on Monhegan Island; Portland Breakwater (Bug Light) in South Portland; and the tower at West Quoddy Head Light in Lubec.

"Since the opening of Portland Head Light in 1791, lighthouses and lighthouse keepers have greatly contributed to Maine's proud history," said Capt. Brian LeFebvre, commander of Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. "This annual event is a great opportunity for families to gain a rare glimpse inside some of Maine's most beautiful and historic navigational landmarks."

Sponsored by the Maine Office of Tourism, American Lighthouse Foundation, and U.S. Coast Guard, this annual event is the largest of its kind and attracts between 15,000 to 18,000 visitors. This year, 24 lighthouses will be open to visitors for guided or self-guided tours. The list of participating lights and their specific accessibility times and details can be found here.
