It has been a great year for the Queen’s Sailing Team (QST) as they’ve placed first in many events hosted by the CISCA (Canadian Intercollegiate Sailing Association) and ISCA (Intercollegiate Sailing Association), with the help of one of their most decorated sailor, Zachary Baum.
Since starting his time at Queen’s University in 2013, Zac has been a big asset to the sailing team. With an extensive background in sailing, he has been able to help the team with the Optimist, 420, 29er and i14 classes, leading QST to winning several national titles over the years.
During his time with the Queen’s sailing team, Zac has competed in many CICSA and ICSA events with multiple podium finishes. This season he won the A Division, and overall title for Queen's at the 2017 Can/Am Cup.
Zac’s effort and dedication is seen through the multiple awards he has earned this year. From receiving the Nathan Cowen Memory Trophy (Queen’s Sailing Team MVP), to being named Male Skipper of the Year by CICSA, it is clear that he is a valued sailor within the community.
As mentioned by his team, Zac is a “strong and passionate advocate for Canadian collegiate sailing, and an integral part of the Queen’s Sailing Team for 5 years, Zac has achieved many wins, received several accolades and is one of the Queen’s Sailing Team’s most decorated sailors in recent years.”
His commitment to the sport is seen not only on the water, but also on land. Zac offers his time to improve the sport by being the co-president of the Queen’s Sailing Team, as well as sitting on the Board of CICSA. Due to all of his effort, Zac was identified as this year’s Landon Gardner Volunteer of the Year by the CICSA.
November’s Helly Hansen Sailor of the Month goes to: Zachary Baum! Congratulations!
