One of the biggest fleets for many years – 53 boats – took part in Rock Sailing Club's Junior Camel week this year. Aged from eight to 17, it is always a very competitive event with the younger competitors striving to emulate the older sailors.
Race Officer Nick Scroggie set fair yet challenging courses for the racing and he and his crew were well supported by the patrol boat drivers. The last day of the regatta was blown off with wind strengths judged to be far too strong for the fleet. Otherwise, there was a variety of weather conditions to cope with, challenging the skills of the young sailors.
Overall winner of the week and the Hendraburnick Cup was Marcus Coleridge in his Laser Radial. It was an impressive performance with three first places and a second to his credit. Laser Radials dominated the first four places with Ormy McWilliam taking second place, Alex Regan third and Niam Keohane fourth.
As always, the social side of the event ensured the fleet had a good time off the water with Swallows and Amazons games, a barbecue, and the prize giving dinner and disco. Club Manager Richard Smith and his team ensured the fleet was well fed and watered through the week.
It was, as always, a great week and it was noticeable in the fleet how many children and grandchildren of Club members were sailing. The tradition lives on!
