Albacore Nationals at Swanage Sailing Club - Overall

by Jeremy Rook 15 Jul 2007 13:54 PDT 13-15 July 2007

The 2007 UK Albacore Nationals were won by our visitors from America, Barney (Mr USA Albacore) Harris and David Byron – they won the penultimate race and with it the championships. Orlando Gledhill and John Frary were runners up with Chris Turner and Simon Maguire third.

A light Force 2 – 3 North-Easterly gradually veered during the 2 races round to the South-East forcing the Race Team from Swanage S C to have to move the course several times, during and between races. Making a welcome return to the front of the fleet in the last race was Neville Herbert crewed by Kay Woods in his father’s new plastic Speed boat – in fact in the last race 5 of the first 6 boats including the winner were of the GRP persuasion.

In October this year there will be an opportunity for the UK sailors to take on Barney Harris on his own waters of Chesapeake Bay, USA together with the rest of the US and Canadian fleets at the biennial International Albacore championships. 8 Boats are going on the container from the UK but there is still the opportunity to charter a boat in the States.

Albacore Internationals at Abersoch day 4
UK National Championships goes to Nev Herbert and Lewis Fowler Well day 4 will go down as "fresh to frightening". Wind, waves and sun, not quite as much of the last of those but enough to add to the experience. The first race of the day was series race 8 and the final one for the UK Nationals. Albacore Internationals at Abersoch day 3
Wind dropped all day and the sea state went from predictable to sloppy At last the sun came out to greet the fleet at the committee boat with the wind as forecast at 15 to 20 knots. The sail out gave everyone the chance to practice their downwind techniques ready for the triangle-sausage courses. Posted on 2 Aug 2023

An epic day for the fleet! Abersoch delivered an epic day for the Albacores with a base wind of 16 knots gusting 24 knots, with a SW breeze producing proper surfing conditions. To add to some of the carnage that produced, we got controversy with effectively two winners! Posted on 1 Aug 2023
