Ground Zero in RAK - 7 August 2009 - site of the America’s cup Island? SW
Sail-World received these images from Ras al-Khaimah taken just 24 hours ago.
We are told they are of the area designated for the 33rd America's Cup infrastructure.
Comment from on the ground in Ras al-Khaimah is less than flattering:
'Just some general input on RAK where I have lived and worked for the past 12 months.
'It has no yacht club, one relatively small hotel in Al Hamra - adjacent to the island they have now apparently ear-marked for the Cup harbour buildings (the only other 4-5 star hotel is 20 miles away to the north); the Ocean and the air (depending on wind direction) is filthy from a large industrial area built directly behind the Coastal Road in Al Hamra.
'Al Hamra produces most of its electricity by using local diesel-generators, as the national Abu Dhabi grid cannot provide enough power.
'I live in Dubai now - it is a different world!'
