Nippa wins at Marine Awards

The Nippa is a lot of fun to sail Nippa Sailing
The Nippa sailing dinghy received the Commondation
Award in the Boat of the Year 'Sailing Trailerable' category of the Australian Marine Industries Federation (AMIF) Marine Awards at a gala dinner at the Marriott Resort Surfers Paradise on Thursday night.

The award was accepted by Iain Murray, who was thrilled to receive the award for his design.

This prestigious award is selected on the basis of a 90% or better score based on comprehensive criteria for judging. Points were awarded for many factors including innovation, appearance, design, safety features, construction, value for money, ergonomics, comfort, storage and performance.

Judging was totally independent of commercial interests, by a team who have a proven track record in all facets of the boating industry, from retailing to broadcasting.

The Nippa is a 2.65m (8'6') long introductory sailing dinghy specifically designed for children aged between 5 and 14 years. A strict one design, it can be sailed by either one or two children, with up to 120kgs combined weight.

Features include a flow-through cockpit that eliminates bailing, while the flush centerboard case provides added room and comfort. This feature also allows an adult to fit in the boat so they can share a child’s learning experience.

Weighing just 25kgs (44lb), the Nippa delivers children an exhilarating performance due to its hull shape, rig and construction.

Developed by leading sailmaker and yachtsman Michael Coxon, of North Sails Sydney, the sail/mast combination is nicely balanced and ensures the sail is easily trimmed through a wide wind range, providing a boat that performs to its optimum straight off the shelf.

Iain Murray designed the Nippa so his three daughters could enjoy their learn-to-sail experience. He was given strict instructions, as his daughters told him it had to be fun, fast and above all, ‘look cool’.
