World Cruising Destinations - new book by Jimmy Cornell

by Nancy Knudsen on 28 Aug 2010
World Cruising Destinations SW
There's not a sensible long range cruising sailor in the world that does not carry on their boat a copy of World Cruising Routes by Jimmy Cornell, and now there's a fitting and charismatic companion - World Cruising Destinations.

Just as World Cruising Routes tells you comprehensively the best sailing routes to follow round the world, so World Cruising Destinations is there to tell you what you'll find when you get there.

While in some senses it replaces Cornell's 2001 World Cruising Guide, this is more like the butterfly that emerged from its caterpillar.

The book, over 400 pages of it, is not only a reference book of immaculate integrity covering every maritime nation of the world, but also so enticingly and inspirationally presented that it would make a wonderful present for sailing fathers on Father's Day.

With hundreds of superb photos to bring the information to life, it is a publication any sailor would love to have either on board or at home. It is not only suitable for an active world-wanderer, it would also be treasured by the lounge-chair dreamer.

Inside you'll find all the information and more that the World Cruising Guide contained: A country profile, a map, a summation of its climate, the necessary formalities for entry, facilities for repair and re-provisioning, a guide to the cruising guides that might be available for the country. Then there's a host of information such as on the flag, time zones, buoyage, currency, electricity, communication codes, even phone numbers for diplomatic missions, in case you need instant help along the way.

However, the most interesting additional information is the boat charter possibilities in each country. So if you fancy sailing in that country, there is instant information about if - and how - it is possible. Just browsing the book can leave you reaching for the telephone...

It's published by Adlard Coles Nautical, a division of A&C Black. It will be available in Boat Books Australia, www.boatbooks-aust.com.au!online or in their Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne stores in September:

About Jimmy Cornell:
Romanian born Jimmy Cornell took up sailing while working as a reporter for the BBC World Service in London. In 1974 he fitted out himself a 36 foot fibre-glass Trintella III, van de Stadt design.

In 1975 he left England with British wife Gwenda and their two children (Doina 7 and Ivan 5) on a world voyage lasting 6 years, which took them to some 70 countries and totalled 68,000 miles. During the voyage Jimmy Cornell sent back regular radio reports to the BBC World Service.

In 1986 he launched and organised the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers), from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean. As a result of the success of the first ARC he founded the World Cruising Club, which specialises in international sailing events.

Now in its 21st year, the ARC is the largest trans-ocean event in the world and one of the most successful sailing events in history. Jimmy is credited with being the founder of the cruising rally concept and, between 1991 and 2000, organized five round the world rallies.

Since then he has cruised the world extensively, sailed all oceans, and clocked up more than 200,000 nautical miles. As well as writing the world recognised reference book World Cruising Routes, now in its sixth edition, he also founded Noonsite, a well known reference website for long range cruisers. He is the author of thirteen books, including his memoir A Passion for the Sea, published in 2008 (also available from Boat Books).
