Laser Radial Youth World Championship 2014 - A new weather system produced a change of direction to the north west and 14 knot winds giving excellent sailing in big waves. For the first of the three races scheduled all fleets were started on time with only three disqualifications for early starts in the girl’s fleet. As the day progressed the winds got progressively lighter, as forecast, with the last races finishing in five to six knots from the same direction.

Overall the leader board in the boy’s championship saw little change considering the wide range of wind speeds and sea conditions. Four out of the top five posted three single figure results. The new leader, Joel Rodriguez ESP was the only exception when he scored an eleventh in the last race of the day. He was able to discard this thanks to his consistent top five places in the first four races of the championship and a dominant performance in the first two races of the day twice leading his fleet home by a big margin.

On the girl’s course Spanish achievements were reversed when Martina Cacho was displaced into second by Monika Mikkola from Finland. Mikkola mirrored Rodriguez with two first places and a tenth which she discarded.

Both fleets are now split into two girls and three boys ‘Finals’ fleets to race head to head in the remaining four races over the next two days.
