A diagram from 1992 Louis Vuitton Cup. A disqualification on this fine point of the racing rules eventually cost NZL-20 the Louis Vuitton Cup. NZL-20’s bowsprit and spinnaker pole were slightly reconfigured so the spinnaker was attached to the pole and the pole attached to the bowsprit, rather than the previous version which had the pole attached directly to the bowsprit which infringed if the crew was slow gybing. The original configuration saw NZL-20 deducted a race win after a protest hearing.
