World Record rowing attempt at Sanctuary Cove

by Rosalie Taylor on 24 May 2012
Andrew rows for four hours at a time, taking half hour breaks between sessions - Sanctuary Cove Boat Show Rosalie Taylor
Andrew Abrahams is pushing his limits in a record-breaking attempt to row one million metres during the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show. The distance is equivalent to travelling between the Gold Coast and just South of Sydney.

The surf-lifesaver from Brisbane is hoping to raise five hundred thousand dollars through the challenge, which will go towards keeping children off the streets.

Lions Club Volunteer Chris Robinson said the funds raised will go directly back to the community to purchase equipment for children in need.

In order to beat the current world record of 128 hours rowing on a Concept 2 rowing machine, Andrew expects to be rowing for approximately five and a half days.

Despite a failed attempt due to illness at last year’s boat show, the rower is back more passionate and determined than ever before to conquer the record.

Muscular Skeletal Therapist Nick Catterall is part of the team of dedicated supporters ensuring the champion stays healthy during the challenge.

'There is a team of dieticians, nutritionists and other experts on board who have really calculated what he will need on an hourly basis ,' he said

'Powerade and Gastrolyte sachets are used for the energy his body will need to get him through, and on a four-hourly basis he breaks for only half an hour of sleep.'

Almost three days into the attempt, Andrew is exhausted and sore but maintaining a steady rhythm with full expectations of completing the challenge.
