Wild and Windy for Sail Melbourne
by Sail Melbourne Team on 9 Jan 2002
The last two days have seen some blustery conditions for competitors in the
various Regattas taking place as part of Sail Melbourne, this has been great
for some but not for others.
The young sailors in the Australian Minnow Championships have seen the start
of their Championships delayed for the second day in a row with winds
exceeding 35 knots for most of the day. A new program of racing has been set
for Wed, 9th Jan, when hopefully 4 races are scheduled for completion.
For the Southern Ocean Multihulls the breezy conditions have provided some
exciting racing. These super fast multihulls have been blasting around the
waters of Westernport with racing being brought to an abrupt end on Tuesday
afternoon when one of the largest multi’s sailed into one of the marks
severing it from the ground tackle.
The Formula Windsurfing Championships has seen five races completed revelling
in the fresh conditions, with Russell Brice and Sam Parker fighting it out
for top position.
At Black Rock Yacht Club the Australian Contender Championships have got
underway with 3 races being completed yesterday and Arthur Brett is leading
both the Australian and Australian Open Championships with three first places.
With calmer conditions forecast for today Port Phillip will see plenty of
racing.
