BMW Sydney Winter series Results

BMW Winter Series 2006, Sydney (AUS) - YOU’RE HIRED Andrea Francolini Photography http://www.afrancolini.com/
With just three Sundays of pointscore racing in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s BMW Sydney Winter Series, the overall pointscore lead has changed in a number of divisions after today’s racing.

It was a glorious day to be sailing Sydney Harbour, brilliant sunshine from a near cloudless sky, a relatively consistent, albeit shifty, 10-15 knot southerly breeze – and just as enjoyable back on the Deck at the CYCA.

Well, apart from a couple of boats still struggling to get home when the prize giving got underway at 4.30pm.

Most competitors found some patches of light wind or a testy tide that slowed them down, but the Race Committee allowed most divisions to sail two complete rounds.

As a result, there were some upsets and several changes at the top of the leader board.

In Division A, a third place lifted shot Denis O’Neil’s Iain Murray-designed harbour racer, Atomic, to a one point lead of Dick Cawse’s Vanguard, which placed sixth

The winner was the Davidson 59 You’re Hired (Geoff Morgan and Andrew Banks), formerly Sandy Oatley's Another Duchess, consolidating their third place in the pointscore. Second place went to Sydney 47CR Wot’s Next (Graeme Wood).

First place in Division B went to the Pacific Sailing School’s Cadenza from Fincorp More Witchcraft, with skipper John Cameron still muttering 'appeal' from his disqualification from his win two weeks ago. Cyrene (Michael Selby and Elena Wise) placed third.

A brand new Sydney 38, Limit, a casual entry by Alan Briety, scored a huge win in the Sydney 38 Division from John Messenger’s Utopia and Peter Goldsworthy’s Henriot Champagne. However, Australian champion Estate Master (Martin and Lisa Hill) still heads the provisional pointscore despite finishing near the back of the fleet today. Only two points separate the next four boats, Henriot Champagne, Next, Outlaw and Team Lexus.

Regular BMW Sydney Winter Series competitors Moty and Judy Bergman notched up their first win for 2006 with J Force in Division C, scoring a comfortable victory from the Bavaria Match 38 Game Set (Stephen Roach) and Akela (Akela Syndicate).

Wave Dancer (Rob McConghie) had a runaway win in Division D from Doug Sturrock’s Windflyt and MRX (Jon Short and Miles Bastick) with that third place lifting MRX to first place on the pointscore, two points ahead of Scarlett O’Hara (Robert Skol), which placed sixth today.

A win in Division E has strengthened the overall pointscore lead of Georgia Express (Ian and Jean Guanaria) in Division E, scoring today from Very Tasty (Chris Sligar) and Tojo Never Made It (Wayne Keavy and Robert Bryden). Georgia Express has a six points lead from Tojo Never Made It.

Balmain Sailing Club member Dawn Murray’s win at the helm of the Sonata 8 Umbakumba in Division F was her first win in a most consistent series. 'This is the first time we have won by crossing the line first,' said Dawn, who owns the boat in partnership with David Stenhouse – 'I just clean and maintain the boat', he quipped as Umbakumba crossed Peter Campbell’s veteran Bonbridge 27 Hornblower to take the lead.

The pointscore is still close in Division F, with Umbakumba holding a two points lead from Carnaval (Bernie Van’t Hof) which passed early leader Hornblower on the final beat to windward to take second place.

Casual entry Woof (Jim Walsh) won Division G in a close duel with Lunch on Sunday (Chris Bowling) and Obsession II (Bruce and Neil Tavener) from Middle Harbour Yacht Club. Pointscore leaders, Naughty Call, Wild Blue Yonder and Speedwell finished well back in the big fleet.

CYCA director John Walton scored his second win of the BMW Sydney Winter Series in Division J with Vicacite, scoring by a close 33 seconds margin from DJ II Bos Global (Michael Travia), third going to Stormy Petrel (Kevin O’Shea). The win lifts Vivacite to top of the leader board from Wings Three (Paul Billingham), which placed fifth today.

Tickalara (David Livermore) was one of the first boats away today at 11am and ended up winning Division K by just one second from Hubcap (Herman Heiligers) which started at 11.13am. Third place went to Days like This (Arthur Psaltis and John Ross). Hubcap’s second has lifted it to one point lead from Gusto (Phillip Denison) which placed fourth today.
