Freshie’s newest World Champion

by Suzanne Fisher on 18 Jul 2012
Tristan Brown Suzanne Fisher
Tristan Brown from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club has won the Laser Radial Men’s World Championships sailed from the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in Brisbane.

Conditions were tricky throughout the championship with big shifts and large pressure differences. The score lines of his competitors showed just how difficult it was to be consistent. Using this as his strength, Tristan led for most of the regatta, taking out the gold with a race to spare. In a seeming 'lap of honour', Tristan went on to win the final race. Fellow Club member Matthew Wearn took second place overall to make it a Freshie 1, 2.

Tristan has been a solid achiever at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, developing his sailing over a number of years through the Club’s Youth Squad programme, achieving some great results along the way on a Local, State and National level. In 2011 Tristan placed first in the local level 'Pot of Gold' regatta, second in WA State Championships and first in Australian Laser Radial Championships. In May 2012 Tristan was named Yachting Western Australia Male Sailor of the Year.

Outside of his preferred class the Laser Radial, Tristan has competed widely, racing in Kiel Week 2011 sailing a full-rig Laser, winning a Silver Medal at the World University Games representing Curtin University and qualifying for the Perth 2011 ISAF World Sailing Championships. Tristan is an inductee of the Australian University Sport Honour Roll, WAIS squad member and training partner for the World #1 Laser Radial sailor Marit Bouwmeester (NED).

Tristan’s sailing achievements have been attributed to his positive attitude and determination to succeed. He is a wonderful role model for our Club’s junior sailors and we take great pleasure in congratulating Tristan on his achievement; we are confident he will continue to enjoy much success in the future.
