29er European Championship 2012, being held in Sopot, Poland was opened by the President of Poland, Mr. Bronislaw Komorowski and the First Lady today in front of over 400 sailors, coaches and spectators on the beach of Sopot.
The event was celebrated along with the send off of the Polish Olympic sailing team and the recent celebration of the 95th anniversary of sailing in Poland. The six Polish 29er teams competing in the event could not have been more proud among the 18 other countries here to compete for the European title.
Back among the competitors are the 2011 champions, Americans Zack Downing and Andrew Cates. Also returning is 2010 World Champion Kevin Fischer of France with a new crew, Yannick Jauvin. Current 2012 EuroCup leader Johanna Sommarlund and Marcus Anjemark of Sweden are also registered to compete in the 99 boat fleet.
Racing begins on Sunday, July 15 with three days of the qualifying series followed by three days of the final series. The prizegiving will be held on Friday, July 20.
