March 2013 will see yachts race in the inaugural Central Triangle Race with two crew members onboard. Starting from Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club in Wellington from March 2, boats will race the 195 nautical miles of Leg 1 to Akaroa.

After a brief stopover at Akaroa Yacht Club, Leg 2 will be the longest with 350 nautical miles to Napier. A restart from Napier Sailing Club will see the boats race the final leg back to Wellington.

Keen to promote two handed sailing in the central part of the country, RPNYC Commodore Geoff Herd has worked with SSANZ and previous Round North Island (RNI) competitors to put the event together. 'With eight boats from the central region competing in the 2011 RNI, we were keen to build on that interest and design an offshore race in this part of the country' said Geoff Herd.

SSANZ have endorsed the race as a qualifier for the 2014 RNI as this should be a great test for boat and crew alike. Prizes will be awarded for PHRF, IRC and line.

For Notice of race, entry form and more details go to www.rpnyc.org.nz/events or contact Geoff Herd, Event Manager geoff.herd@xtra.co.nz or sailing@rpnyc.org.nz.

A look at The Ocean Cleanup and its the 30 Cities Program The cliche goes that one should avoid meeting one's heroes, as there's always a chance that the flesh-and-blood person might not live up to expectations. While I've never met Boyan Slat, I'd gladly take this risk.
