Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown invited the Wellington Spirit Sailing Team to a mayoral reception to celebrate their recent success in regattas in Perth and Spain, crucial first steps in their quest to win the World Match Racing Championship for Wellington.

Mayor Wade-Brown said 'It’s my great pleasure to welcome home the Wellington Spirit, a team that’s been enjoying success on foreign shores and putting Wellington’s sailing talent on the map.'

'I congratulate the Wellington Spirit Sailing Team for their recent qualifying success in Perth and Spain a crucial step on the path toward the World Match Racing Tour and if we can have a Wellington team on the World Match Racing Tour, then there’s great potential for bringing that tour here!'

Wade-Brown went on to say 'You’ve already achieved great success with your previous endeavours, now I look forward to seeing how you take the Wellington Spirit to the top of the world.'

'There is still some way to go to achieve those goals, but with Wellington’s wind in your sails and the city behind you, the Wellington Spirit will make waves across the world for many years to come.'

The next step for the team is a series of regattas in the American Grand Slam tour in August.

The Wellington Spirit are delighted by the local support of the team and are training hard to do the city proud.
