The annual Yachting WA awards night was held on Friday 11th May 2012 at Royal Perth Yacht Club. During the ceremonies, Mike Cull, nominated by the Royal Perth Yacht Club, was named 2012 Sailor of the Year with a Disability.
Mike has been involved with sailing in Western Australian for many years and participated on the YAWA Development Committee.
Mike’s in depth knowledge of sailing and his quiet, understated but determined drive identified him as a natural participant for involvement in the Sailability WA programme which he has been a part of for 10 years. Mike is currently a Committee Member of Sailability WA.
He is a keen sailor who actively sails and competes in the Sailability Access Class. This past year he won the Asia Pacific Australasian Championships, the Australian Championship and took third in the Sail Melbourne International Regatta. Mike travelled alone across Australia by car with his Access Liberty dinghy on the roof to attend the SIRS Regatta – a major achievement which drew significant positive comment.
No stranger to the winner’s podium, Mike holds the 2006 WA State Champion title, the 1996 WA State Champion (Hobie 16 Trapseat), the 1996 International Champion Title (Hobie 16 Trapseat) and the Bronze title for the 1997 (Hobie 16 Trapseat) at the International Sail Week in San Diego.
Mike sails as a regular crew member in a variety of Division 1 keelboats in club racing and is an active senior member at Royal Perth Yacht Club. His recent acquisition of a new Access Liberty Class dinghy has enabled him to compete at a national level in this competitive class.
