A new fishing platform has been installed at Wy Yung, near Bairnsdale (VIC) allowing recreational anglers better access to the Mitchell River.
The platform was funded by recreational licence fees and has improved opportunities for anglers of all abilities at one of the river’s most popular fishing spots.
With the support of the Wy Yung Angling Club, the East Gippsland Shire Council used a grant of $44,858 from the Recreational Fishing Licence Grants Program to design and construct the platform.
Anglers had found access to this section of the river difficult to negotiate in the past. The platform has overcome what was uneven and slippery bank access and has been designed to help shore-based anglers enjoy clear casting to open water in pursuit of estuarine species such as bream and mullet.
The platform will also help protect surrounding vegetation and prevent further erosion of the river bank.
